Jackie passed around two pens she¹d made, one with distinctive small grape
clusters as decoration, the other in Purple heart. Her pattern-maker
husband showed a remarkable segmented bowl/platter with a square-rigged
sailing ship in marquetry in the center. And he also had a very complex
vase-form of wedged rings of segmented woods. This couple has been making
huge strides over the past year or so since they joined the group. Hats Off
to them both!

Judge Norm had a number of new pieces, all finished to a high gloss in
Waterlox. And his bowl forms are getting nicer and nicer at an accelerating
clip. Congratulations Norm!

Also shown was a set of small, nested Cocobolo bowls made with a developing
tool which apparently has some limitations when used on the harder woods.
This member, whose name escapes me, also showed a piece combining some
unusual woods, including Cocobolo, Paduk, and Palm! He mentioned he¹s using
a modified ³Beal Buffing System² with seriously less expensive buffing
wheels.

Scott Clark then gave a very well-thought-out demonstration on designing and
turning vessel bases. His initial message was ³Draw it First!²

Scott then showed and talked us through several possible designs, including
drawings, chucking methods, and ultimately showing how even a small curve at
the base can lighten and elevate the piece. All-in-all it was a very
informative and carefully executed demo with plenty of Otake-home¹ messages.
Thanks, Scott.

It surely would have benefited by having a TV monitor available, however!
The latest AAW mag has a detailed article on how to make a video camera boom
for ideal positioning without view blockingS Anyone interested?

The meeting wrapped up just before nine with a frenetic raffle on two
levels. The $5 level was for a remarkable piece left by Jimmy Clewes after
a recent demo. The $1 level had a gift certificate plus numerous pieces of
wood.

Respectfully Submitted, Chuck Quibell
